Statewide Survey Recognizes Sutter Santa Cruz for Excellence
Local patients responding to an extensive hospital survey have placed Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center among the state’s leaders in patient care satisfaction in seven of eight categories measured in the largest and most comprehensive publicly reported hospital patient survey in the nation.
The "California Hospital Experience Survey" (formerly known as PEP-C) released a study September 14 polling more than 34,000 patients at 200 hospitals this spring. Participating hospitals accounted for 52 percent of the state's 389 general acute care and children's hospitals, a 77 percent increase over the first survey three years ago.
Ric Nichols, administrator, said Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center earned the highest three star ratings for patient preferences; coordination of care; information and education; physical comfort; emotional support; involvement of family and friends; and experience with safe medical practices.
"Our high ratings reflect the positive experiences of our patients and the high standards set by physicians, nurses and support staff," said Nichols. "This is the third consecutive year that Sutter Maternity and Surgery has ranked among the best of the 200 participating hospitals surveyed in California."
The California Hospital Experience Survey is the largest scientifically valid survey of hospital patient ever conducted in the United States. The survey was collected from patients between November 2003 and March 2004 and sponsored by the California Institute for Health Systems Performance and the California HealthCare Foundation.
Results of the surveys are used to determine areas of improvement and recognize the success of individual hospitals.
